"Something is Off!...When Hyperpigmentation Appears!

It can sound like and look like a really big deal, but what actually is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is in essence inflammation and is a sign that “something is off.” It is the darkening of skin caused by increased melanin.

What are some of the leading causes of hyper pigmentation?

Causes of abnormal melanin production include hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), certain drugs and supplements, blunt trauma, hyperthyroidism, Addison’s disease, diabetes, laser trauma, chemical peeling, and increased sun exposure/photo trauma.

Now that we know some of the possible causes….

How is Hyperpigmentation commonly treated?

*Remember, products you put on your skin will either sit on top (be ineffective) or be absorbed (be effective but potentially systemically toxic).

Here are the usual culprits you'll find in products used to treat hyperpigmentation:

Hydroquinone: A chemical originally used to develop black and white photos and x-rays, as well as to preserve rubber goods. The side effects of hydroquinone use include eczema, inflammation, psoriasis, asthma, birth defects and a condition called Exogenous Ochronosis which causes skin to produce blue and black pigment.

Kojic Acid: From a fungus, it has been shown to cause dermatitis and cell mutations (i.e. cancer) in mammals. It is toxic to the liver, kidney, and reproductive organs.

Retinoids: A chemical compound that becomes toxic when exposed to sunlight. (DNA Skin's Supernatural Vitamin A Serum™ is a far better alternative- as it contains pure, non-synthetic Retinol (Vitamin A). It aids in lightening discoloration without adverse reactions or being systemically toxic.)

Now let's explore healthier ways we can treat hyperpigmentation that are equally, if not more so, effective.

At DNA we capitalize on inhibiting and regulating melanin while supplying the skin the natural constituents it needs: DNA, RNA, amino acids, peptides, tyrosinase inhibitor, lipids, enzymes, etc. We offer a variety of products to regulate melanin production and protect the skin. They are:

Skin Lightening Line

Don’t just inhibit pigment, regulate it with the DNA Skin Lightening Line which uses ferulic acid (a powerful antioxidant), white tea, walthera indica extract, AHA acids, and other powerful antioxidants. These 100% natural, herbal products have shown that lighter and brighter skin can be achieved without the use of other potentially harmful lightening and bleaching ingredients.

Derma-CLR™

There is also an oral product that helps lighten the skin: Derma-CLR™. It is a supplement that is an effective antioxidant that maintains skin’s elasticity and healthy color. It contains a pure form of L-glutathione. It helps to lighten the skin’s hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production and diminishing the signs of aging (wrinkles, age spots, increased pore size, dryness, etc.).

Vitamin C

As we age, the amount of Vitamin C we need internally and topically increases. We make less reconstructive enzymes as we age, increasing the need to repair cells in other ways. Epidermal levels of Vit. C diminish 425% by middle age. DNA MediClear Vitamin C is the most active and stable topical Vitamin C available. It can be cocktailed with any product in the skin care line to instantly turn that product into a powerful antioxidant. When taking Vitamin C internally, be sure it is of high quality. Try the Esther C.

Sunscreen

It’s important to know… Chemical sunscreens generate more free radicals on human skin after one hour of sun exposure than are generated on untreated skin. In essence, by wearing a chemical sunscreen, skin is twice as compromised. Any antioxidants added to a toxic mesh of chemicals become pro-oxidant, meaning they cause cellular damage to skin. Good news is that i.Bar Beauty offers sunscreens which are natural and chemical free.

DNA Skin Care System

DNA Skin Care Products

At the DNA Health Institute, we address the aging process with a whole body wellness approach. We have developed treatments and products that are 100% natural, chemical and preservative free. The treatments yield dramatic results without skin tissue trauma, pain or recovery time. The all-natural products enhance the esthetic image while supporting skin and systemic wellness.

All ingredients used in the DNA CryoStemTM Skin Care product system are rich in organic phytochemicals, organic phytonutrients, organic plant antioxidants, plant fragrances (no artificial fragrances added), therapeutic grade essential oils, flower essences,essential flower and seed oils, organic fresh elastin, hyaluronic acid, DNA, collagens, proteins, minerals, vitamins, lipids and nutrient rich ocean vegetation. All of our ingredients have a beneficial biological effect on human skin. By carefully sourcing natural ingredients and applying the basic scientific principles of ionic chemistry, DNA Health Institute proudly formulates products without the use or need for petrochemicals, synthetic colors, fragrances,chemical preservatives, binders, thickeners, and other artificial ingredients. We create all natural products to ensure the safety and welfare of our consumers and we maintain the highest-standard of product quality by purposefully excluding ingredients that are “standard” in the skin care industry. Many of these ingredients can be detrimental to skin and body health and some are potent carcinogens. (Please click on harmful ingredients for a list of the potentially harmful ingredients that are commonly used in many skin care products and cosmetics)

However, at the DNA Health Institute, having freshness and purity of the ingredients is only the first step. Dr. Aguilar selects ingredients that have a natural attraction/affinity to each other based on the principles of ionic chemistry. This is the key to gaining the dynamic therapeutic value and full healing potential of each ingredient within a formulation. Great care is taken not to introduce ingredients that would create a repulsion (repelling or pulling away activity) that would render one or more of the ingredients in the formulation inactive or cause the ingredients to diminish or lose their vital life-force.

After the initial ingredients selection, the ingredients are further evaluated for their power of attraction and their ability to potentiate (to synergistically augment the activity of other ingredients). Once these key factors have been established, an herbal infusion of multiple ingredients is formulated for the purpose of behaving as one dynamic, cohesive and balanced entity (substance). This phase of the infusion is termed the marriage process. It is the synergistic process of successfully creating a marriage of active and organic herbal ingredients by following strict flow charts based on ionic chemistry.

In formulating the DNA CryoStem skin care products, some ingredients are allowed to molecularly merge and bond for a period of two hours to two weeks for the purpose of acting as one integrated ingredient. At the Institute, we do not select one or more ingredients to showcase as being greater than the other ingredients in our skin care formulations. We focus on the collective benefits of the total product formulation. The end result of the marriage process is a formula far greater than its individual constituents. As a result of the marriage process, the energy (life-force) and vitality of the formulation is retained to provide superior therapeutic benefits and rapid transformation for skin rejuvenation and facial image enhancement.

Nutrition is the system of consuming, absorbing and using nutrients needed by the body for growth, development, regeneration, and the maintenance of the life process. Nutrients are the natural chemical substances in foods that nourish the whole body. At the DNA Health Institute, we draw upon the same nutritional guidelines that are required for the building and maintenance of a healthy body, and we utilized these key nutrients to work with the skin’s biology and to target its specific needs.

The following nutrients, skin foods, are used in DermaNutraceutical Aesthetics(DNA):
PROTEINS
Proteins are naturally occurring, extremely complex molecules with long chains of amino acids. These acids link in various ways to form many different proteins. Protein contains the elements of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, usually sulfur, and occasionally other elements (as phosphorus or iron).
It may include many essential biological compounds (as enzymes, hormones, or immunoglobulins). Proteins are an essential component of the cell structure and are a part of the cell’s nucleolus, ribosomes, Golgi complex, and the cell membrane. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the material
from which the chromosomes of a cell’s nucleus are formed, governs cell growth and inheritance. DNA instructs chemical compounds to form, or synthesize, the proteins that control specific cell functions.
Contained in: CryoStem Therapy-H (Hydrating) Ampoules, CryoStem Therapy-F (Firming) Ampoule and CryoStem Lift Stick.
Skin Benefits: Proteins are the basic building blocks of collagen and elastin. Sixty percent (60%) of all body collagen consists of proteins. Proteins contain amino acids and enzymes that are essential for skin physiology and regeneration.

VITAMINS
Vitamins are organic substances that play a key role in regulating cell functions throughout the body.
The body cannot produce some vitamins, which are considered essential. Therefore, a large amount of these essential nutrients are only available to the body through diet and supplementation. Vitamins are
essential for regulating both the metabolic functions within the cells and the biochemical processes that release energy from food. In addition, evidence is accumulating that certain vitamins are antioxidants, sub- stances that protect tissues from cell damage, oxidation and premature aging.
Contained in: CryoStem Therapy-HTM (Hydrating) Ampoules, CryoStem Therapy-FTM (Firming) Ampoules, CryoStem Lift StickTM, and Supernatural Vitamin A Crème. TM
Skin Benefits: Vitamins accelerate cell renewal; thus, fortifying the skin and contributing to the quality of skin health and resiliency.
MINERALS
Inorganic substances found in the earth’s crust that play a crucial role in the human body for enzyme creation, regulation of heart rhythm, bone formation, digestion, and other vital metabolic processes. Minerals are present in your body in small amounts. All together they add up to only 4% of body weight. Yet, these inorganic substances are essential for a wide range of vital functions including tissue hydration, toxin elimination and enzyme mobilization. Hair, skin, nails, and bones consist of high-levels of various minerals. As with vitamins, humans must replenish their mineral supply through diet and supplementation.
Contained in: CryoStem Therapy-H Ampoules, CryoStem Therapy-F Ampoules, CryoStem Lift Stick, Floral Bliss,and Oceana Mineral Gel.
Skin Benefits: Minerals contribute to the elasticity and tone of the skin and are essential for proper levels of skin hydration. Minerals are very important for neurological function and trauma. Minerals help the body handle all forms of stress (including environmental) and support the body in combating health challenges from poor nutrition, smoking and drugs (both prescription and recreational) which all impact the skin’s health and vitality.
ENZYMES
These special proteins are necessary for every chemical reaction in the body and the normal activity of cells, tissues, fluids, and organs. Enzymes digest the food consumed and are essential for the production of energy required for running the body. Specific enzymes have been proven, both clinically and medically, to have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Vitamins, minerals, and hormones require enzymes in order to function properly.
Contained in: All DNA CryoStem Skin Care Products
Skin Benefits: Enzymes help to accelerate the natural process of skin desquamation (exfoliation). Enzymes create a delivery vehicle to maximize the penetration of the DNA CryoStem skin products and enhance the DNA professional treatments.
PHYTOCHEMICALS
Therapeutic compounds found in fruits, vegetables, grains, herbs, and other plants that may help alleviate symptoms of some ailments and protect the body. Phytonutrients are nutrients found in plants that are believed to protect the plant from sunlight and environmental damage. Research suggests that phytonutrients found in fruits and vegetables may play an important role in protecting human cells from damage as well. Phytochemicals are considered molecularly compatible with the body creating a harmonious relationship in the production of hormones that contribute to anti-aging benefits.
Contained in: All CryoStem skin care therapy products except for the CryoStem Therapy-H, CryoStem Therapy-F and CryoStem Lift Stick. Skin Benefits: Phytochemicals are potent antioxidants from the plant kingdom that are used to counteract and repair free-radical damage of cell tissue.
ANTIOXIDANTS
Safe and potent substances that protect cells from the damaging effects of highly reactive oxygen molecules called free radicals. The body makes some antioxidants; others, such as vitamins C and E, are obtained through diet or supplementation.
Contained in: Naturally found in all CryoStemTM skin care therapy products.
Skin Benefits: Antioxidants protect skin cells from free-radical activity, damage and aging.
ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFAs)
They are the building blocks that the body uses to make fats. The body must get various kinds of EFAs through diet or supplements (such as fish oil, flaxseed oil, borage oil, and various other vegetable sources) to assure proper health. Essential Fatty Acids build healthy nerves and protect against nerve damage, keep arteries supple, improve blood flow and circulation, reduce inflammation, promote skin healing, control the cell’s use of nutrients, and produce hormone-like substances called postaglandins, which stimulate contraction of blood vessels. In addition, EFAs are essential for immunological function.
Contained in: CryoStem Therapy-H (Hydrating) Ampoules, CryoStem Therapy-F (Firming), CryoStem Lift Stick, and All Booster Shots.
Skin Benefits: Adequate amounts of EFAs will contribute to the anti-aging process and healthy skin free of hyper pigmentation, inflammatory conditions, and improved circulation to the skin with a continuous supply of oxygen and nutrients to the cells. EFAs provide sufficient and consistent circulation to the tissue cells and assist in the release of cellular toxins. The toxins are transported through the circulation for disposal by the body’s eliminative system.
AMINO ACIDS
The protein in food and in your body is a combination of chemical units called amino acids. Every cell in the body needs and uses amino acids. Your body breaks down the protein from foods into its individual amino acids, which are then recombined to create the specific types of proteins the body requires. Each cell, in fact, is programmed to produce exactly the right combination for its needs.
There are two types of amino acids, non-essential and essential. The body can manufacture non-essential amino acids, but must obtain essential amino acids from the foods consumed. Amino acids are needed to maintain and repair muscles, tendons, skin, ligaments, organs, glands, nails, and hair.
Contained in: CryoStem Therapy-H, CryoStem Therapy-F, CryoStem Lift Stick,Enzyme Firming Masque as the amino acid, Proline, and in all other daily skin care products as the amino acid, Glycine.
Skin Benefits: Amino acids are the most basic elements of skin structure and, therefore, are involved in every aspect of healthy skin. Deficiency of amino acids result in the diminishing of skin integrity and skin aging. Insufficient amino acids make the skin more prone to disease conditions and breakdown of collagen and elastin.
HORMONES
Any of various chemical messengers, produced by the adrenal, pituitary, thyroid, ovaries, testes, and other glands, that have far-reaching effects throughout the body. Hormones regulate everything from growth and tissue repair to metabolism, reproduction, blood pressure, as well as the body’s response to stress.
Progesterone: A sex hormone secreted by the ovaries and placenta that prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation of a fertilized egg. Clinical studies reveal a strong evidence of anti-aging benefits are achieved and maintained through the single hormone, progesterone. As the body ages, levels of progesterone diminish.
Contained in: All DNA CryoStem Moisturizers (medical grade progesterone)
Skin Benefits: Progesterone helps maintain the proper skin pigmentation, elasticity, and a youthful luminosity to the skin. It supports the skin in being less prone to the formation of lines and wrinkles.

TOXIC INGREDIENTS- Are they aging your skin faster?

Toxic Ingredients
Over the last 100 years, the rate of cancer in the U.S. has sky-rocketed from 1 out of 800 people diagnosed, to 1 out of 3 today.

Are you wondering WHY?
We have some of the answers.

The FDA has banned just nine chemicals from cosmetics compared to the European Union which has banned more than 1000. A product that is labeled as being “natural” may be mixed up with synthetic dyes or fragrances. Many expensive products are full of the same ingredients and harsh chemicals as the less expensive brands. And, many “common” synthetic ingredients are now being linked to conditions such as allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue syndrome, testicular abnormalities, decreased sperm counts, and breast cancer.

Shopping “natural” or “organic” is no guarantee that your products are free of dangerous chemicals. 1,4-Dioxane is often present in the leading “natural” and “organic” branded products . The use of the cancer-causing petrochemical Ethylene Oxide generates 1,4-Dioxane as a by-product, which is suspected as a kidney toxicant, neurotoxicant and respiratory toxicant.

The ability to understand and analyze the ingredients in your skin care is important for correctly choosing the products that provide the best possible balance of effectiveness and safety.

There are specific reasons why the understanding of skin care ingredients is useful. In essence, a number of factors determine whether a topical skin care product has an antiaging effect:
* Do any of the ingredients have significant capacity to stimulate any aspects of skin regeneration, remodeling or renewal (e.g. collagen synthesis or cell turnover). In other words, are any of the ingredients active?
* Are active ingredients present in sufficient amounts and are they stable in the chemical environment of that particular formula? In other words, do active ingredients stay active during the typical shelf-life or do they degrade by reacting with air or other ingredients?
* Does the product's formula allow active ingredients to penetrate the skin well enough to be effective?
* Do any of the inactive ingredients interfere with the effect of the active ones? Do they have the potential to harm the skin, e. g. by causing allergic reactions, irritating or dehydrating the skin, clogging pores, etc.

An optimal skin care product should contain one or more active ingredients in an effective concentration. Its inactive ingredients should not interfere with the active ones and, whenever required, should provide safe and adequate preservation, stabilization and delivery into the skin. Also, all ingredients should lack significant potential to cause skin damage.

Unfortunately, it is not a trivial task to fulfill all these conditions cost-effectively, in an easy-to-use formula with a long shelf-life. As a result, many (if not most) skin care products on the market come short of these requirements. To find a product that fits or at least comes close to this standard, it helps to have some understanding of the ingredient list.
Below is a list of the some of the most prevalent ingredients found in “natural” skin care products and their effects on the human body.

Ingredients Causing Irritant or Allergic Dermatitis, Substances that may irritate the skin and mucosa or cause allergic reactions (eczema):
* Parabens are used as preservatives. They may cause skin rashes, redness, and pain, or, after inhalation, irritation of the eyes and the mucosa of the nose and throat.
* Methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone
* Bronopol (2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol)
* Propylene/butylene glycol is derived from petroleum. It is used to extract substances from herbs.
* Quaternium-7, -15, -31, -60, etc
* Stearalkonium chloride
Ingredients Causing Photosensitivity
Some sunscreen ingredients, after exposure to the sun, may yield substances that may cause photosensitivity – a strong skin reaction, resembling sunburn (4):
* PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid, rarely found in sunscreens today)
* Benzophenones
* Cinnamates
* Salicylates
* Fragrances: musk, 6-methylcoumarin
Ingredients Causing Acne
The following substances may cause acne:
* Mineral oil and other petroleum derivatives, like liquidum paraffinum (posh mineral oil), paraffin oil, paraffin wax, and petrolatum coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin's ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders.
Ingredients Causing SkinAging
Skin aging is mainly caused by UVA rays. Prolonged, repeated exposure to the sun, when using any sunscreen product without sufficient UVA filtering, may result in skin ageing. The following sunscreen ingredients may also cause skin ageing :
* Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD40) dries up the skin, promotes brown spots and premature skin aging (1).
* Mineral Oil,  Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging.
Ingredients Causing Cancer
The following substances were found to cause cancer:
* Nitrosating Agents
The following chemicals can cause nitrosamine contamination, which have been determined to form cancer in laboratory animals. There are wide and repeated concerns in the USA and Europe about the contamination of cosmetics products with nitrosamines.
· 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol
· Cocoyl Sarcosine
· DEA compounds
· Imidazolidinyl Urea
· Formaldehyde
· Hydrolysed Animal Protein
· Lauryl Sarcosine
· MEA compounds
· Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc
· Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
· Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
· Sodium Laureth Sulfate
· Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
· Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate
· TEA compounds
* Diazolidinyl may release formaldehid, so it is irritant and carcinogenic.
* Most of FD&C color pigments are carcinogenic (according to animal studies). They also contain heavy metals that may cause skin sensitivity.
* Parabens , Parabens are toxic and allergenic. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood. Measurable concentrations of six different parabens have been identified in biopsy samples from breast tumors.A University of Reading study, published in the January 2004 Journal of Applied Toxicology, found that 18 of 20 breast tumors studied contained significant concentrations of parabens. Parabens have been shown to be weak estrogen mimickers, binding to the cellular estrogen receptor (ER). They also increase the expression of genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells (MCF-7 cells) to grow and proliferate in vitro.
* Lanolin   itself is perfectly safe. But cosmetic-grade lanolin can be contaminated with carcinogenic pesticides such as DDT, dieldrin, and lindane, in addition to other neurotoxic pesticides.
* Mineral oil can be contaminated with PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) that cause cancer.
* Talc , routinely used in genital area, increases the risk of ovarian cancer.
* Hydroquinon   is extremely dangerous and may lead to the development of cancer. It has already been banned in countries like the U.K. and France, and Dr. Jacobs of the F.D.A. has concluded that Hydroquinone is mutagenic, clastogenic, and immunotoxic.
* Retinol
Ingredients Causing Other Symptoms
Symptoms of a damage of internal organs may be caused by:
* Fragrances (substances that give the smell to the cosmetic product). Their exact composition is usually not revealed on labels, but one or more of several thousands substances may be included. They may cause headache , dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, depression, hyperactivity and irritability.

* Propylene/butylene glycol is derived from petroleum and is used to extract substances from herbs. It is highly toxic and may cause eye, nose and throat irritation (after inhalation), neurological and blood disorders and pulmonary edema.

Nanoparticles in Sunscreens
Nanoparticles are particles 1-100 nanometers in size (1 nanometer is one millionth of millimeter). They usually represent particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that were broken down to prevent opacity and thickness of sunscreen. According to Environmental Working Group, nanoparticles do not represent damage to the human body if used on intact skin . Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration claims the same .

Cosmetic Ingredients, Prohibited or Restricted by FDA
USA Federal Drug Administration (FDA) prohibits or restricts use of the following ingredients in cosmetics (they rarely appear in sunscreens, though):
* Prohibited ingredients :
    * Bithionol  – may cause photosensitization.
    * Chlorofluorocarbon propellants.
    * Chloroform – was determined as cancerogenous in animal tests. Residual amounts from its use as a processing solvent are allowed.
    * Halogenated salicylanilides (di-, tri-, metabromsalanand tetrachlorosalicylanilide)   – may cause photosensitization.
    * Methylene chloride - determined as carcinogenic in animal tests.
    * Vinyl chloride  - prohibited in aerosol products, bacause it is carcinogenic.
    * Zirconium-containing complexes - prohibited in aerosol products because of their lung toxicity (granuloma formation).
    * Some cattle materials are prohibited to protect against bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, ‘mad cow disease’). Allowed cattle materials are tallow, hides, milk and their derivates [21 CFR 700.27, as amended].
* Restricted ingredients:
    * Hexachlorophene (HCP) may penetrate the skin, so its concentration in the product may not exceed 0.1 percent and may not be used in lipsticks.
    * Mercury compounds may be absorbed through the skin and cause allergic reactions or chronic neurological symptoms. Their concentration may not exceed 65 parts per million in eye area cosmetics or 1 part per million in other cosmetics.
    * If a sunscreens is used in cosmetics only “to protect the product color”, this has to be clearly denoted on the product label, otherwise a product labeled as “contains
    * sunscreen” may be considered as a drug by FDA regulation

Phthalates
generally covered by the general term “fragrance,” and readily absorbed by our fingernails, skin and lungs. In July 2005, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported finding the metabolized forms of dibutyl phthalates, used in nail polish and synthetic fragrance, in every person tested in their national “body burden” study. Phthalates can lead to liver cancer and birth defects in lab animals. A study published in May 2005 from the University of Minnesota, Environmental Health Perspectives, found a connection between phthalates and genital abnormalities in baby boys.

Mercury
Is used in skin-lightening creams and in eye makeups (as a presservative).
Mercury is toxic to development, as well as to the nervous system and is suspected to have harmful effects on the respiratory system, the kidneys and gastrointestinal and reproductivesystems. [Strong animal, human and children evidence]

Talc
Cosmetic talc is carcinogenic. Inhaling talc and using it in the genital area, where its use is associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer, are the primary ways this substance poses a carcinogenic hazard.

Silicone derived emollients
Silicone emollients are occlusive - that is they coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it, and do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.)
Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact
Dimethicone
Dimethicone Copolyol
Cyclomethicone

Oxybenzone
This chemical found in many sunscreens enters the bloodstream and has been shown to disrupt hormones. And yet, it is found in most commercial sunscreens. EGW recommends avoiding products that contain it.

DMDM Hydantoin
Yet another dangerous ingredient with found in sun block is DMDM Hydantoin. This ominous preservative releases formaldehyde, a toxic compound that prevents the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms that could cause the skin care product to spoil. While formaldehyde serves its useful purpose as a preservative, its proven toxicity is known to be harmful to the skin and the environment, according to the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the Environmental Working Group gave this ingredient a 7 out of 10 hazard rating score.

Diazolidinyl urea

Established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Contains formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical, is toxic by inhalation, a strong irritant, and causes contact dermatitis.

Toluene
From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):
Poison! Danger! Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through skin.
Vapor harmful. Flammable liquid and vapor. May affect liver, kidneys, cardiovascular system and central nervous system.Causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
Inhalation: Inhalation may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms of overexposure may include fatigue, confusion, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Peculiar skin sensations (e. g. pins and needles) or numbness may be produced. Very high concentrations may cause unconsciousness and death.
Ingestion: Swallowing may cause abdominal spasms and other symptoms that parallel over-exposure from inhalation. Aspiration of material into the lungs can cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal. Skin contact: Causes irritation. may be absorbed through skin.
Eye Contact: Causes severe eye irritation with redness and pain. Chronic exposure: Reports of Chronic poisoning describe anemia, decreased blood cell count and bone marrow hypoplasia. Liver and kidney damage may occur. Repeated or prolonged contact has a defatting action, causing drying, redness, and dermatitis.
Exposure to toluene may affect the developing fetus.

If you're thinking you will simply start buying cosmetics that say “organic”, “natural”, “hypo-allergenic” or “herbal” to avoid these dangerous chemicals please beware. Products with these labels still often contain these dangerous chemicals, minerals and synthetics because there is no regulation or standard that companies who label their products are required to follow. Read the ingredients. The typical adult uses nine cosmetics/ personal-care products a day with an average daily load of around 126 chemicals. Most of these chemicals (including the one's mentioned above) are absorbed into your body through your skin. Others, found in lipstick and lip balm, you actually eat as they come off your lips when eating, drinking or wetting your lips.
Cosmetic companies use synthetics and fillers in their products to keep costs down and give themselves the greatest profit margin possible. They are spending pennies on the dollars you spend at your local drug or department store to buy their products. What you are paying for is an image of beauty perpetuated in advertisements. You are not usually paying for quality with most commercial cosmetic brands.
What can you do to save your skin and your body from exposure to a lifetime of harmful chemicals? Inform yourself, read labels, investigate products if they don't list complete ingredients.

There are natural alternatives that are better for you and your skin.
