It can sound like and look like a really big deal, but what actually is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is in essence inflammation and is a sign that “something is off.” It is the darkening of skin caused by increased melanin.  

What are some of the leading causes of hyper pigmentation?

Causes of abnormal melanin production include hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), certain drugs and supplements, blunt trauma, hyperthyroidism, Addison’s disease, diabetes, laser trauma, chemical peeling, and increased sun exposure/photo trauma.

Now that we know some of the possible causes….

How is Hyperpigmentation commonly treated?

*Remember, products you put on your skin will either sit on top (be ineffective) or be absorbed (be effective but potentially systemically toxic).

Here are the usual culprits you'll find in products used to treat hyperpigmentation:

Hydroquinone: A chemical originally used to develop black and white photos and x-rays, as well as to preserve rubber goods. The side effects of hydroquinone use include eczema, inflammation, psoriasis, asthma, birth defects and a condition called Exogenous Ochronosis which causes skin to produce blue and black pigment.


Kojic Acid: From a fungus, it has been shown to cause dermatitis and cell mutations (i.e. cancer) in mammals. It is toxic to the liver, kidney, and reproductive organs.


Retinoids: A chemical compound that becomes toxic when exposed to sunlight. (DNA Skin's Supernatural Vitamin A Serum™ is a far better alternative- as it contains pure, non-synthetic Retinol (Vitamin A). It aids in lightening discoloration without adverse reactions or being systemically toxic.)

More About The LYCO IONIC JESSNER PEEL™

- combines Resorcinol, Salicylic Acid, L-lactic Acid, Red Wine and Lycopene (a powerful anti-oxidant derived from watermelon seeds) to provide a very noticeable and effective exfoliation. Jessner peels are deeper than AHA peels due to the combination and strength of the peeling agents but with the modified LYCO IONIC JESSER PEEL™ the client/patient will experience less of the common jessner side effects ie, irritation, blotchy redness and itching. Results are generally visible after only one treatment. The LYCO IONIC JESSNER PEEL™ process usually requires one full week from application to completion and is great for those who are acne prone, photo damaged/hyper pigmented, have fine lines, or have post inflammatory pigmentation due to acne scarring. Up to 6 layers of solution may be applied to the skin producing a mild ‘sunburn’ effect.
