Plump up your Pout! Secret Steps to Fuller Lips

Fake your way to juicy, fuller, luscious lips in no time! These secret steps to pillow lips will supercharge your smile without the pain and expense of augmentation injections. Enhancing and amplifying your natural lip line with a combination of shadow and light can add big results with little effort.

Before applying makeup, prepare your lips by exfoliating to slough off any flaky, dry skin. Gently massage the surface with a toothbrush and lip treatment, such as DNA's Phyto-Lipid Scrub, an exfoliator that softens, and heals (keeping lips hydrated for hours!). Apply it to a wet toothbrush as you would toothpaste. This will also help to increase circulation, which temporarily provides fullness. Plus, makeup applies evenly and wears longer!

Tissue off any excess lip treatment and then build a base using a lip primer applied with a brush or your fingertips. We recommend using  Citylips Lip Plumping Gloss-a multipurpose lip enhancer that plumps lips instantly while also building volume over time by increasing natural collagen production and adding in moisture retention. It makes an excellent primer as it evens out texture while nourishing the lips with anti-oxidant protection. Besides extending the wear of your lip product, the Citylips Gloss will keep your lips moisturized while minimizing the appearance of fine lines.

Use highlight and shading techniques around the lips to create depth and give the illusion of fullness. Apply a shimmery highlighter or skin toned eyeshadow to the cupids bow using a small brush.

Create a shadow below the lower lip by applying a matte powder, or a shadow 2-3 shades darker than your natural skin tone, below the lip using a small tapered brush. Using a light hand, concentrate the product just below the center of your lower lip, blending outward (towards the outer corners of lips) and downward (towards the chin).

Too many people underestimate the importance of the lip pencil! A lip pencil allows you to shape and balance the lips while preventing lipstick and gloss from feathering. To intensify the plump appearance use a lip pencil that matches your natural lip color and round out the sides and the upper lip when lining.

You can also cheat by lining just slightly outside the natural lip line at the center of both the top and bottom lip.  You can also use highlighting and shading techniques to create additional fullness. Use a concealer or nude lip pencil to bring the middle portion of lips forward. We suggest a Cream Concealer in your shade or slightly lighter.  Apply to the center of the top and bottom lip with a concealer brush.

For some serious pout, apply a deep colored lip pencil to the inside of top and bottom lips, where both lips meet. Draw a line down the center of the lower lip and a few lines outward for further emphasis.  Use a sharpened pencil and be careful not to draw over too much of the concealer at this step.

Now its time for color! Lighter colors make lips look larger, while darker shades tend to reduce the visual imprint. Apply lipstick with a lip brush covering the shade where you over lined.

Use the lip brush to lightly blend (careful not to overblend!) the dark liner and concealer, just to fade the edges slightly. Top with an ultra shiny, sheer or iridescent gloss applied using a light patting motion, so as not to blend out any of your work.

Lips still not looking pouty enough for you? Using a lip brush, tap a touch of the shimmery highlighter shade onto the center of your upper lip. The shimmer in shadow will reflect light for an added boost of dimension!
